First Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (1967-), Colvard received a B.S. from Berea College, an M.A. from the University of Missouri, and a Ph.D. from Purdue University. He was a professor and Head of the Department of Animal Science (1948-1953) and Dean of the College of Agriculture (1953-1960) at North Carolina State College.
